Hand Off Deferred Concrete Work Without Calling It Complete

When exterior repair work is deferred, the closeout record should say what the crew actually completed and what the next team will inherit. A useful handoff gives the owner a work boundary, outstanding decisions and a reporting contact. It should not imply a permanent correction or guaranteed protection for work that was not performed.

Separate status from intention

Use specific status labels: installed, prepared, deferred or not investigated. Describe any temporary measure within its actual scope and instructions. Identify who must review it and when. Do not turn a tentative future plan into a promised start date or an assumed structural solution.

Preserve the information needed to restart

Keep photographs, system documents, exposed-condition notes and owner communications with the zone record. The next crew needs to know what may have changed since those records were made. Recheck site conditions before treating earlier preparation as ready for installation.

Worked example

Illustrative example: an exterior joint is documented but not repaired before demobilization. The final note labels it deferred and identifies the next decision. A broad “job complete” line should not erase that distinction from the handoff.
