Before Quoting a Narrow Repair, Define the Adjacent Work Boundary
A partner contractor may be asked to repair one area while nearby work belongs to another trade or a later phase. The quotation needs a boundary that explains those interfaces. A narrow scope should remain clear without suggesting that adjacent conditions were reviewed or corrected.
Separate the requested work from neighboring conditions
Identify the proposed repair and the surfaces, assemblies or equipment beside it. Ask which adjacent conditions are relevant to the selected method and which remain outside the request. Avoid assuming that a customer’s marked rectangle establishes a technically appropriate boundary. Record what needs further review before describing the area as ready for repair.
Clarify interface responsibilities
Ask who protects adjacent finishes, supplies access and resolves any prerequisite work. Distinguish a condition reported by another trade from one your team has actually examined. If a dependency remains open, state it in the quotation rather than absorbing it into a broad promise. Do not alter someone else’s work or expand into a specialist scope without the relevant authorization and qualifications.
Make later changes traceable
Keep the same boundary reference through the proposal, work authorization and completion record. If the actual area changes, record the reason and follow the project’s change process. A photograph can help locate the boundary but should not become an unsupported claim about concealed conditions. Clear interfaces protect the comparison of bids and the meaning of the final record without requiring internal-cost itemization.
Copyable worksheet
Use one row for each field. Mark unknown information clearly and retain the original records.

| Requested repair boundary | ____________________ |
| Adjacent work outside the request | ____________________ |

Worked example
Illustrative example: a fictional partner prices a localized repair beside a separate drainage project. The quotation identifies the interface and asks who confirms the drainage prerequisite. The partner can explain the narrow repair without claiming responsibility for every nearby condition or silently expanding the work.
