A Surface-Preparation Photo Should Not Be the Only Basis for a Profile Claim

A photograph can locate a prepared area and document its general appearance. It may not establish that the concrete meets the profile required by a selected protective system. Before calling preparation accepted, identify the applicable requirement and the appropriate verification process rather than relying on a rough-looking image.

Connect the profile to the selected system

Keep the current preparation requirement with the material and area it concerns. Different systems can require different surface conditions; a method that worked for a previous job does not automatically establish suitability here. Ask the responsible technical reviewer which requirement controls and how any ambiguity is resolved. The aim is an identified acceptance basis, not a generic instruction to make every surface as rough as possible.

Use the intended comparison or measurement

ICRI publishes preparation guidance and profile references. Cortec’s manufacturer guidance explicitly distinguishes photographs of reference profiles from actual verification. These references explain why an image alone is a limited proxy; they do not prescribe a preparation method for this project. Have the appropriate trained personnel use the applicable comparison or measurement approach. Do not assign a profile number remotely merely because lighting makes a surface look similar to a published picture.

Keep documentation and acceptance connected

The photographic record can still show the zone, date and condition being reviewed. Link it to the responsible person’s actual verification and any stated limits. Profile is one requirement within a wider substrate review: a profile claim should not silently certify cleanliness, moisture condition, bond suitability or hidden soundness as well. If the evidence or requirement is incomplete, keep the decision open through the established review process. This guide provides no preparation technique, tool setting or proprietary work sequence; it helps the crew distinguish a useful image record from the specific acceptance statement the next operation depends on.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a fictional partner sends a photograph of a prepared area for progress reporting. The technical reviewer asks for the project’s applicable profile verification before releasing the next step. The photograph remains part of the record without being relabeled as a complete substrate acceptance result.
