Temporary Heat Is Part of the Indoor Concrete Work Plan

Cool-season concrete work can prompt a quick request for temporary heat. The equipment choice affects more than the air temperature shown on a display. Before bringing a heater or generator into the plan, review the occupied space, ventilation, equipment instructions and selected repair system with the responsible site team.

Separate a temperature target from an equipment decision

A product’s application requirement does not authorize any convenient way of warming the space. Identify the proposed equipment, fuel or power source and actual work location. Keep the material-readiness question and the equipment-safety question separate. A warm air reading alone does not establish acceptable substrate conditions or resolve risks introduced by the heating arrangement.

Review combustion and ventilation concerns

OSHA identifies combustion-powered equipment, including certain heaters, as a potential carbon monoxide source in enclosed or partly enclosed work areas. Its portable-generator guidance says not to use generators indoors. The responsible qualified personnel should establish the appropriate arrangement; opening a door is not a substitute for that review. This article does not design ventilation or provide a workaround for unsuitable equipment.

Coordinate conditions through the whole activity

Ask who maintains and checks the reviewed arrangement while the work and required protection period continue. Consider nearby occupants and other trades through the normal site process. If the arrangement changes, revisit the applicable safety and material conditions before continuing. Retain the project-specific decision without claiming that temporary heat accelerates every product, guarantees readiness or replaces the selected system’s instructions. The right objective is controlled work under an appropriate plan, not simply reaching a convenient temperature quickly.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a fictional partner is asked to warm an enclosed repair area before starting. The site team reviews the heating approach and rejects an indoor generator idea. The crew does not interpret a material temperature requirement as permission to improvise unsafe equipment use.
